Land Rover BAR Supporter Newsletter – Issue #23 November

The recent period has been an exciting time for Land Rover BAR.

I was very pleased to be able to announce that Grant Simmer has joined the team as our new CEO. Grant's experience and achievements in the America's Cup are second to none having won the America's Cup four times, either as a sailor, design coordinator or general manager. Grant is the right person to help Land Rover BAR achieve the goal to bring the Cup home to Britain and we are looking forward to him starting his role in the New Year. It is also great news that Martin Whitmarsh will continue as an advisor to the team and as CEO of BAR Technologies, which has recently been formed to commercialise technologies developed through the teams involvement in the America's Cup. Martin has a had a great impact on the team so far and will no doubt lead the technologies group from strength to strength.

We have just finished our first week of TP52 training with Tony Langley and his Gladiator TP52 racing team, winter had certainly arrived on the Solent but it was great to get out and blow off the cobwebs. We are delighted to be working with Tony and we look forward to competing together in the TP52 Super Series. He is one of the biggest supporters of British sailing and this partnership will give Land Rover BAR a unique opportunity to return to the subtleties of monohull sailing at an extremely high level.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Ben Ainslie

Grant Simmer joins Land Rover BAR as CEO

We have added a wealth of experience to our America's Cup challenge by announcing that four time America's Cup winner, Grant Simmer, will join the team as CEO.

Simmer has competed in 10 America's Cup cycles. His first victory came as the young navigator aboard Australia II during their historic victory in 1983, breaking America's 132-year stronghold on the Cup. It was the first time in the competition's history that the trophy had left American shores. The Australian born sailor/designer has gone on to win the America's Cup three further times as head of design, managing director and general manager with Swiss team Alinghi and more recently with ORACLE TEAM USA.

Huffington Post blog by Ben Ainslie

"It's really positive to see so much focus on sustainability, especially within sport. The power will be the sport, the fans and our partners all coming together to make this "leap of faith" and reduce the impact we all have on our world."

Students from Wicor Primary School visited the team base for a fun-filled day of practical learning delivered by the 1851 Trust, Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) and the University of Portsmouth's Institute for Marine Sciences (IMS).

The students took part in a hands on session assisting PhD students from IMS in their monthly oyster monitoring exercise – measuring and recording oyster mortality and identifying a huge number of cohabiting species.

Currently, we have 1000 oysters living under our pontoons filtering up to 200,000 litres of water per day and providing living quarters for crabs, shrimps and even seahorses!
